Jessica’s Story

What was your life like before you started the Anxiety Intensive Outpatient Program at Renew?
Before Renew, I had considered myself “cured” from depression and anxiety years ago. In college I had seen a therapist regularly and found a good balance of medication that worked with my body and lifestyle. Sure things had become more stressful at work and in my personal life, but I figured it would all pass if I didn’t let the stress slow me down. Suddenly, I started noticing I was hardly capable of making it through a day. It would take hours to convince myself to get out of bed. Even things I loved to do, like spending time with friends, seemed like a tasking chore.

What made you decide to give the program a try?
I knew it was time to get help on Halloween. A friend and I had been planning a Halloween party at her house for over a month. When the night of the party arrived, it took me three hours to get to her house and another hour to leave her bedroom. I was terrified to talk to anyone, even my best friend – when I’m healthy, I’m quite the social butterfly.

What is your life like now or how have things changed?
As cheesy as it sounds, I truly feel that I am a new and improved version of myself. I’m back to being cheerful, energetic, and excited about each day. I meditate (almost) every day! Prior to this program I could not imagine how helpful taking 10 minutes for myself each day would be! I also learned wonderful and helpful techniques such as journal prompts, how to communicate my needs with others, and how to set my boundaries with myself and others.

Who do you think may benefit from the Anxiety Program at Renew?
I can’t think of anyone who wouldn’t benefit from this program. Anyone who can feel something is “off” about themselves. The program is a great space to learn emotional intelligence, communication, and how to build a stronger relationship with yourself and others.

If someone is thinking about joining the program, but are hesitant, what would you tell them?
You deserve to be healthy and happy, you owe it to yourself to give it a try. You will be amazed by how much your day to day life can be changed in a few sessions. I know it can seem daunting, but each person in the room is there to support you and learn with you.
